Quran Research Center: “al-Haqimu al-Alim”

“Al-Haqimu al-Alim”, the name of the research center, is derived from two of Allah’s (j.j.) titles: “Haqim (Ruler)” and “Alim (all-knowing)”. The reason for placing the term “hiqmat (wisdom)” before “ilim (science)” is due to the need for hiqmat, which is greater than the accumulation of information which people have achieved today. Science and skills are expected to bring peace and welfare to the people, however, today’s modern world has been formed on political and financial wars and conflicts, which has also impacted the scientific and academic fields and caused people to neglect moral values and ideals which are considered as the basis of civilization.

“Thus, we make efforts to draw attention to the risks associated with these materialistic criteria, which are deprived of significant values and ideals, and to maintain the presence of wisdom along with science in order to abstain from and any implications, such as corruption and mischief. These efforts are significantly needed by the researchers and students who are conducting post-graduate studies, on the reference of “al-Haqimu al-Alim” as our scientific research center. The objective here is to achieve the ideal in a scientific thesis, particularly a doctoral thesis, and to focus on its form and organization, and on observing the balance of elements that make it a scientific study.

“The relationship between the title of the research center and the fact that the last parts of verses end with Allah’s titles (for instance, “al-haqimu al-alim”) arises from the style related to the meanings of these verses. The verses where the concept of “haqim” was used together with the concept of “alim” indicate that the former is mentioned in seven sections before the latter. The surahs covering these verses are all from the Mecca period and have been reported to be marfu within the Arabic syntax literature. (An’am 6/83, 128, 139; Hijr 15/25; Naml 27/6; Zukhruf 43/84; Dhariyat 51/30). From a rhetorical perspective, the thinking process indicating that “practices are performed according to wisdom” can be understood from the presence of hiqmat before ilim in certain verses. Moreover, the presence of the concept of “alim (scholar)” thereafter reflects the wit indicating that “orders are in accordance with ilim”. (See at-Tahrir wa at-tanwir 7/336).
