SHAFAQAT KOTAN
Abstract Of Title
ABSTRACT THE QORAN AND ARGUMENTS OF HISTORICISM Kotan, Şevket PhD A. U., I.S.S, Basic Islamic Sciences, Department of Exegesis Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Salih AKDEMİR January, 2001, 361 Pages This dissertation deals with historicism as a problem of exegesis and the problem of the historicity of the Qpran. The main assumption is that historicism is a problem of exegesis but that in order to understand what kind of problem is this it should be go back to the historical context it has emerged, and it should be understood in that context It has been observed that the approaches hitherto studied the relationships of the Qpran with history, has neglected a sufficient examination of this context and employed a superficial definition of the concept In order not to fall in such a superficiality in the First Chapter I tried to define the position of the historical approach within its historical context throughout the western history of philosophy. In this context it has been found that several approaches could be distinguished in the course of its development For example, the Heideggerian-Gadamerian line against the romantic historicism is very prominent, and it may bring about a turn, in case of being insisted sufficiently. The Second Chapter tries to do a critical examination of some approaches of modern Muslim scholars, such as Faziur Rahman, Roger Garaudy, Hasan Hanafl and Mohammad Arkoun. It is tried to show that all displace the historicist approach from its context The contributions of these scholars to the contemporary Islamic thought in general, and the exegesis in particular are examined, and their positions within the general context of historicism is pointed out In the Third Chapter some referential points usually referred in the debate on the historicity of the Qpran are reexamined. Especially the idea of the Occasions of Revelation, the concept ofhududullah (the borders put by God), some practices of the Prophet's companions and some related verses from the Qpran are treated and their special reading from an historicist point of view is analysed. The final Conclusion this dissertation arrives at is that historicism is a special kind of thinking and as such the very historicity should be seen as the basic attribute of the Man. Any application of the term to the Qpran has to bring us in front of a tremendous agnostic sphere. Because, as we conclude, there is no sufficient knowledge at man's hand to decide the historicity of the revelation process which by its very nature exceeds the knowing ability of man, and just on the contrary, the very historical nature of the man is sufficient to hinder man from such a procedure.
