Abstract Of Title

"Khawf" is a concept used to express the fear and worries about one's situation by Allah. This subject is a topic that is both featured using many terms and has a variety of types in Qur'an. Secular and spiritual are being the primary; all kinds of fear that are for human being even for the prophets are extensively featured in Qur'an. This subject is covered by nearly 125 verses and therefore deserves to be a subject of an academic study. Since our study is a concept, using traditional dictionaries, we tried to determine the etymological meaning of the words "khawf, khashyat, rahbat, ru'b and rav', all of which mean fear. Afterwards, using the same technique, we searched for the meanings of the words "ishfak, wajal, hazar, khushû, ikshi'rar, inzâr, taqwa and shukhûs, all have similar meanings to the term fear. These terms are used for the following meanings in Qur'an: While the types of fear that human being may face in this World e.g. fearing from others, hunger, wars, magic, death and the torment that happened to previous nations are the first dimension of our subject, fearing from Allah but not from other creatures like devils and their friends and finally Allah's giving fear to the hearts' of kafirs and the Jews are other dimensions of our subject. However, the horrible fear of the judgement day, the life of hereafter and being interrogated there and the fear of the hell are the most important parts of our subject that we have to focus on. The terms of "emn, sükün, itmi'nan, reca and tama"as opposite concept to fear are also featured in the verses of Qur'an. The feeling of fear and hope moves in the same direction with the development and character building of human being. The soul of human being is full of both fear and hope as a characteristic from Allah's creation. Therefore, from the view of a Muslim's life in hereafter, the balance of fear and hope (khawf- raja) is presented as the ideal behaving model in verses and hadith.
