ERDOGAN AKYUZ
Abstract Of Title
Magic has very important effects on the individuals' and society's life. Even though it is forbidden, magic has been practiced widely in its historical process. The purpose of the study is to identify the corporeal and moral factors that affect people and to show how we should adopt an attitude towards magic and magicians under the guidance of the Qur'an. This study consists of four parts. In the introduction part, the subject and the purpose of the thesis is explained by giving information about magic, sorcery, illusion art, fortune-telling and stars. After making a literature review, it is tried to establish a basis for the other parts. In the first chapter; the historical process of magic, the way of looking at the magic-magicians of the divine religions and the magic practices of today have been searched. In the second chapter; the term of magic in the Qur'an, the discussions about reality and nature of magic, the reasons of the slander of calling some prophets as ''magician'' with different reasons and the relationship of Muavvizeteyn (Falaq and Naas) surahs with this issue have been examined. In the third chapter; it has been tried to identify the social and the theological aspects of magic with examples in terms of individuals and society. In the last chapter; the access of occult knowledge or the limit of occult knowledge and the issue of jinns' "ear-theft in the sky" have been examined. General beliefs and attitudes in our society about magic, sorcery, stars and fortune-telling are revealed by doing a survey in the introduction part. The survey result shows that the majority of our society has implemented or closely followed such practices. The number of people who believe in reality and effectiveness of magic is quite high. Our study provides significant contributions to the magic term in the Qur'an, the influence of the magic on the life of individual and society, occult knowledge and to the claims of that magicians can give occult (unknown) information. And it contributes to determine the attitude that Muslims should take against this claim. Key words: Quran, Magic, Sorcery, Horoscope, Occult, Jinn
