“A semantic investigation of religious equivalents in Turkish Quran translations (XI-XVth centuries)”

AHMED AKBANAR

Abstract Of Title

After the Turks adopted İslam, the Turkish Qur'an translations have a significant place in the history of Turkish language in terms of determining the extent of which Turkish, which is introduced to the concept world of a new religion, can respond to this new concept world. Indeed, every religious experience in cultural history has been a reason for new concept areas and also has led expansion of meaning in language. In addition, the study of religious text translations provides convenience in terms of knowing the extent to which religious terminology is met and which changes occurred in the meaning fields of words, and what some religious equivalents coming from old religion reflect. As language is an ongoing process, religious equivalents – like other words – are prone to change in terms of meaning and structure and undertake new tasks in case of events and new phenomena. In this study, the meaning area of the word yazuk /günah in interlinear Turkish Qur'anic translations written between the 11th and 15th centuries was elaborated in terms of semantics. In the first part of the study, the concept area of the word yazuk / günah 'in the Qur'an was determined, and for this purpose fifty Arabic roots and derivatives were searched in four full-text and three incomplete Qur'an translations written in Eastern and Western Turkish. The equivalents constituting the vocabulary were first evaluated in terms of quantity and interpreted with graphics. Then, the frequency of an equivalent was shown in the Concept Area Index by determining how often an equivalent corresponded to an Arabic root in the target texts. In addition, under the titles, "Founder Names" and "Constituting Verbs", the frequency and the type of the equivalent used in derivating a name or a verb were determined. Under the light of the findings, the equivalents within the concept area of the word yazuk /günah were examined under the titles of semantics and lexicology. In conclusion, it was observed that the assumptions and the current findings coincided to a great extent. Key Words : Koran, conceptual field, semantic field, vocabulary, interlinear translation, semantics, diachronic semantics
