Abstract Of Title

The study has three parts with an introduction and conclusion. The aim,
topic, importance, and methodology of the study are explained in the introduction.
The basic concepts of study are also explained.
The content of study is limited with the concepts of prayer (salât), alms
(zekât), fasting, pilgrimage and sacrifice, because they are the basic concepts in
Koran. In the first part, the concept of prayer (salât) in Koran is analyzed in terms
of its meaning, functionality and content. By emhasizing Ignorance (Cahiliye)
Period and divine religions its historical backround is diagnosed. In relation with
prayer (salât) alms (zekât) is considered with symbolical dimensions. In the second
part, the historical background of the concept of fasting is discussed in terms of
wisdom dimension. In the third part, the same methodology is applied to the
concepts of pilgrimage and sacrifice. As the ritual of sacrifice is closely related
with pilgrimage, it is analyzed in the third part.
The history of rituals and their functional backgrounds are critically
analyzed in all parts of the study. In terms of the common meanings and contents
of rituals, the study tries to develop a discourse that is compatible with the
universal message of Koran.
In conclusion, it is demonstrated that the rituals are compatible with the
ethics of religion. Although there are some degenerations in the past religions,
there are some common characteristics with their rituals and Islamic rituals.
Koran aims to construct a faith that depends on unification (tevhid) and in order to
reach this faith, there should be some ethical behaviours that is obeyed. The rituals
tries to obtain this end.
