The Koran is a holy book which was transmitted in an approximately 23-year period in Arabic. Arabic belongs to the family of Semitic languages and is among those languages that which matches the most with the pro-semitik. It is also the most established and oldest language. Despite this factwe unfortunately don't have reliable documents which were written before the Qur'an in arabic. However this is not the same with the other Semitic languages. For instance, there are documents which date back to 2600 BC. Even Arabic has, like many other languages, changed over time due to various influences. This process of change will hold on. Therefore, with the revelation of the Qur'an, some words imposed meanings they have not contained previously. In this study the concepts "soul" and "spirit" were investigated with the diachronic method. According to this method, to highlight the importance of adventure of these concepts, one has first turned to previous holy books which belongs to the same language family, and subjected these conceptsto linguistic analysis. To preserve the choronological integrity and to include the period of jahiliyya the poems from this period were consulted into the study. The fourth part of the study deals with the use of these concepts in the Koran. So the meanings this concepts contains in the related verses, were investigated and accordingly meanig groups were made up. Then the assessments of the exegetes, related to this meaning groups, were included to the research. The study has been completed with the diachronic and semantic analysis of the terms "soul" and "spirit" and the presentation of the outcomes of the study.
