“Human self-control in Qur'an”
MUNUR TEZJAN
Abstract Of Title
Human's ability to prevent misbehaviors through control of negative feelings is accepted as a positive and desirable situation due to the lots of benefits it provides. Alongside the emphasis on the virtuous side of achieving this, a variety of opinions pertaining as to how to provide self-control has been put forward by, primarily, religions and the sciences which concern the philosophy of ethics and human behavior. Today's daily life which is rife with more stress and tension than yesterday has made the phenomenon of "self-control", which has occupied the human mind throughout the course of history, more important than the past. What Qur'an, in which human and his/her behaviors are at the center, says about such an important issue is a matter of curiosity for all who seek to interpret the situation. In this research, an attempt has been made to determine as to how Qur'an, which is the main source of the religion of Islam, evaluates the "self-control" issue and what it offers for self-control to be provided. The Qur'anic references about the means of self-control like reason, will, conscious and taqwa which are innately given to human and the means which human acquired/developed have been surveyed. Qur'an indicates that human can do its own self-control by developing the potential means innately given to him/her. At this point, the means which is given to him/her and has a central importance for self-control is expressed as the concept of "taqwa". This center of self-control which is told to be placed at every human being is strengthened by linking all the essentials of worship, including faith, with taqwa.
