Abstract Of Title

This study examines the significance of targhīb (encouragement of good) – tarhīb (discouragement of evil) method in the context of both the narrative style and the dichotomic narrative structure in the Qurʾān. It designates, thus, the following questions as grounding point for the dissertation: (1) Does the Qurʾān hold a unique style of expression, despite the fact that it was revealed in Arabic, the language of the society of that time. (2) How does the Qurʾān explain a truth in a detail through its dichotomic narrative style? (3) To what extent the Qurʾān uses the targhīb–tarhīb method? (4) In which fields is the targhīb–tarhīb method used the most in the Islamic tradition? (5) To what extent this study can contribute to understanding the Qurʾān? The dissertation consists of an introduction and three chapters. The introductory chapter describes the topic, method, sources, and the relevant literature and the significance of the study within the Qurʾānic scholarship. The first chapter presents a conceptual framework related to the narrative style and the dichotomic narrative structure in the Qurʾān. The literary forms explained in this chapter can contribute to understanding the language of the divine address. The second chapter deals with the targhīb–tarhīb method with lexical analysis of the words and their uses in the classical lexicographical works. The basic principles of the targhīb–tarhīb method, its facilities, its expression techniques, and its addressees and the evaluation of the verses comprised targhīb–tarhīb style in the context of major themes of the Qur'an follows these introductory lexical explanations. In the third chapter, the use of targhīb–tarhīb method is discussed in Islamic culture, especially in the fields of guidance (irshād), art, and literature. Studying the targhīb–tarhīb method in the Qurʾān can make a contribution to the discussions around the narrative style of the Qurʾān in the context of tafsīr studies. We expect this study can provide a truthful ground for the relationship between the Qurʾān and the individual.
