Abstract Of Title

SUMMARY Aydın, Atik, "Ibn Jarîr al Tabari's Understanding Quran and His Preferences in Interpretation" (Doctoral thesis), Supervisor: Professor Dr. Ömer Özsoy, 1 79 + V pages. Muhammad İbn Jarîr al Tabari (310/923) is the principal, foremost commentator, and one of the most quoted reference in the history of the exegesis of the Quran. His commentary entitled "Jami ' al Bayan 'an Ta 'wil al Ây al Quran" is a rare original piece of work, is very comprehensive and as one of the earliest critical explanations, an authenticated commentary of the Quran. As such, it is an indispensable reference work for Quranic exegesis researchers. Our thesis entitled "Ibn Jarîr al Tabari's Understanding Quran and His Preferences in Interpretation" comprises an introduction and two sections. A brief biographical sketch in the introduction is followed by an investigation of Tabari's life and ideas from a scholarly perspective. The methodology of his concepts and thought processes are examined. The first section constitutes a careful study of Tabari's understanding of the Quran. In this section, on the one hand we have considered, Tabari's conception of interpretation in general, while on the other hand, we have elucidated his opinions on some fundamental principles of exegesis methodology. Further, in this section, concepts of ta'wil and tafsîr are highlighted. The second section includes Tabari's preferences in interpretation, the criteria and arguments supporting these preferences. The annex to the thesis presents a statistical chart displaying the distribution of the criteria and Tabari's preferences in interpretation. We conclude from our study that Tabari's commentary is the product of an understanding and interpretation of the Quran that is centered on language and the audience it addresses. Tabari's preferences in interpretation based on traditional knowledge are less than 10 % compared to his preferences based on language and methodology. This ratio refutes the prevailing assertion that Tabari's commentary and interpretation is based primarily on tradition, and in fact supports the notion that his commentary is inference based. 179
