“Hasan Basri's variant readings of the Qur'an (Qiraats) and their contributions to the Qur'anic commentaries (Tafseer)”

Abstract Of Title

The subject of this study is the variant readings of the Qur'an ascribed to Hasan Basri who was one of the most prominent scholars of the period of Successors and the early period of Qur'anic studies and commentary and the value of these variant readings in the science of Qur'anic exegesis. In the 1st chapter of this work which is comprised of an introduction and three chapters, we have presented some introductory information about the science of qira'a and identified Hasan Basri's place in this historical process. The 2nd chapter is reserved for Hasan Basri's life and his variant readings of the Qur'an. The variant readings in question were examined comprehensively in various books written. By benefiting from the narrations recorded in in the sciences of ma'ani al-qur'an, tafsir, iʽrab al-Qur'an and qira'a since the early period of Islamic sciences, we have tried to present Hasan Basri's variant readings (qiraats) as a whole and indicate the relations of these variant readings with Arabic dialects at that time. Moreover, we mentioned the chains of narrators of the variant readings recorded in those sources. In the 3rd chapter, we have dealt with how Hasan Basri's variant readings have been recorded in the literature of Qur'anic exegesis and analyzed the approaches adopted by the commentators of the Qur'an towards those variant readings. Indeed, throughout the period beginning with Ibn Abi Talib Makki and Salebi and in the following periods, the commentators of the Qur'an benefited from these variant reading as justification for their choices from among different options of meaning of the verses of the Qur'an. As a conclusion, they have physically proven that Hasan Basri's variant readings are important for the commentaries of the Qur'an. This is presented in our study by numerous examples from the literature of tafsir.
