“The responsibility of renewal in the Quran: Self-criticism”

MUSA TURSHAK

Abstract Of Title

This is a human-based study examining, through self-criticism, human being's developing and renewal of himself in accordance with his purpose of existence. Among existing creatures, human being is the only one having an awareness of his own existence. Our study deals with positive and negative sides (Taqwa-Fujur) of the nafs which denotes the self in the Quran. It is being emphasized, in the study, that the critical thinking which has an uttermost importance for individual self-criticism exists potentially within human being and that this idea develops and comes to the light by means of actions depended on piety. Following the explanation of the importance of human being's renewal of his own self, which is termed as purification by the Quran, it is indicated in our study of ours that the most effective way to actualize it is self-criticism. To realize this, however, human being must show the courage of facing himself single-mindedly, since it is the only way through which he can reach to his goal he set. The subject has been handled in line with the exemplariness of prophets and companions of the prophet Mohammad, pursuant to Quranic words like nafs lawwamah, repentance and confession which are in a direct relation with self-criticism. It is also expressed that for ensuring the individual and social development and creating a virtuous society the culture of self-criticism must be disposed within the educational system, institutions and organizations, and within the civil societies like foundations, associations and religious communities. Keywords: The Quran, Self, Renewal, Piety, Self-Criticism, Repentance.
