ABSTRACT Ph. D. THESİS THE QURANIC FOUNDATIONS FOR COEXiSTENCE Orhan Atalay Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Sadık KILIÇ 1998 -Page: 313 Jury : Prof. Dr. Sadık KILIÇ This study done for determining the Quranic bandries of the problem of coexistence or pluralism, the origin of which was to find a solution to the problem of socities having different language, race, religion and culture, and living togethet in the same geopraphical area, aimed, especially, to searc for the divine reason of the difference. Therefore, the Quran, defining the differences of race; language, etnicity and culture as antropholojical divine verses, doesn't accept the differences mentioned above as the cast, discrimination or the reason of inequality among the social groups, and it also stresses frequently on the ide that all humanbeing share the same biological origine, and points out that such discriminations are a sort of deviaton and alienation. The Quran, which doesn't interpret antropological differences beyond what has been said, by saying that all the differences came into being by divine construction, and that's why, pointign out that the humanistic choice is impossible, while stressing on that the values unselectible cannot be the logical reasons of humanistic discriminations, like all normative disciplines, by discriminating that goodness is not the same as the evil, and faith is not the same as unfaith. Thus, the Quran, as a categorical result of this discrimination, dicides all the people lived in every geographical area throughout the history into two; believers, and unbelievers. The Quran, which determines the whole social order by accepting this basic difference as an essence^ by, at the same tine, stressing on that the phenomenon of belife is completely a matter of free choice, says that no method of violence and force has theological and legal result. The Quran, which makes believers theological proclaim obligatory, as a unique method of this obligation, prefers the method of transmitting the "word" to the other. Thus, as for "jihad" which the Quran supports, is not a means to be applied in order to have "the others" accept your own belief, but is an action of overcoming the forces or contitions preventing the free choice of hümanbeings, especially theologicallay. When these situations are overconed, the people are coinpleteley free in their theological choices. Either accepting Islam or remaining in their own religion, they can be the real nember of the Islamic society as a result of social agreement or by signing an unoffensiveness agreement they can have opportunity or living shoulrer to shoulrer with muslims.
