“Reasons of different understanding of the Qur'an in historical process”

Abstract Of Title

There have been different approaches to understand the Qur'an among the commentators. It is possible to see these examples in many books written on interpretation of the Quran. Undoubtedly, every sentence has a definite meaning. It is against nature of language that the same sentence has many meanings at the same time, and then, why have the commentators of the Qur'an assigned different meanings to the same verses? Indeed, this feature of comprehension process which is totally subjective has been ignored and consequently, there have been conflicts among different schools. If it is known what causes different meanings, different comprehension will be taken for granted, disputes will be decreased and there won't be any conflicts. For this purpose, we have searched the reasons which have impact on different understanding of the Qur'an and clarified the topic by exemplifying the reasons that we have identified. There are two main reasons of different understanding of the Qur'an. While the first reason is the one due to linguistic features of the Qur'an, the second reason is the one due to commentator. Moreover, there are reasons such as socio-cultural and political ones in literature. We have studied the examples relating to each one. Consequently, we have pointed out in our study that understanding is a personal process; as a result of this, different understanding is natural and inevitable. We have explained that this fact must cause richness and liveliness rather than disagreement. Therefore, different understandings of the Qur'an commentators must be ragerded as a souce of richness and liveliness, not a reason of differentiation.
