“Collection of the Qur’an into a Codex (Mushaf) between two Covers”
Davud Aydoz
Abstract Of Title
Before its calleetion as a book, the Qur'iln was written on various
materials and memorized by the huffadh, those who specialized in
memorizing the whole Quran, in a certain order. But, for some reasons,
during the Prophet Muhammad's lifetime, it was not possible to make
these written separate sheets as a single volume starting from the Suralı
al-Fatihalı ending with the Suralı al-Nass according to the sequence of
the Qur'an in the hearts of the men. Nevertheless, some of the companions
of the Prophet collected all revealed suralıs in their own private
written codexes. Omar ibn al-Khattab was perturbed by the fact that in
the war of apostasy (riddalı) many of the readers of the Qur'an were
killed and therefore counselled Abu Bakr to give an order to make a
calleetion of the Qur'an. Thereupon Zayd b. Sabit proceeded to collect
the Qur'an in a painstaking study from the written sheets as well as from
the hearts of men in the order of the verses existing in the memories.
In this article, we aim to fınd out some answers to the following
questions: Why was the Qur'iln not yet compiled in a single volume
during the Prophet's lifetime? What were the reasons and factors that
made this compilation urgent and necessary? What were the reasons
behind the fact that Abu Bakr commissioned Zayd b. Sabit to compile
the Qur'an upon the proposal of Omar ibn al-Khattab? What was the
method pursued by Zayd b. Sabit during the compilation of the Qur'an?
What were those materials upon which the Qur'an had been written? W e
also dea! with some issues such as tawatur of the Qur'an, the last two
verses of suralı Tawbalı, the scholarly value of the method followed in
this attempt, the fact that the Qur'an was under the divine protection, the
time of calleetion of the Qur'an, the characteristics of those sheets, the
order of verses and suralıs in the Mushaf and approval of this study by
