Abstract Of Title

This article is intended to exarnine the meaning of this world and the Hereafter in the light of the Qur'an and the Sunnah. First, we will discuss

the pre-Islamic Arabs' view of this world and then establish the fact that
J ahiliyya Arabs had no belief in the Hereafter on the basis of histarical sources
and the Qur'anic verses. Following this, we will deal with the descnption
of the worldly life and Hereafter in the Qur'anic verses revealed in
the Meccan and Medinan periods. Within this franıework, it is determined
that the Meccan verses establish that the Hereafter is one of the pillars of
belief. As for the verses revealed in the Medinan period, they taekle the issue
of the Hereafter in order to strengthen the beliefs of the faithful and
from the point of its function on their lives. The hadiths treat the same issue
in parallel to the Qur'an. The hadiilis canceming the worldly life and
Hereafter seem to have interpretative nature for the Qur'anic verses and
this point has been explained with exanıples. As result, we can say that the
belief in the Hereafter w as established at the very beginning of revelation
of the Qur'an, thus resulting in radical change in the believers' approach to
the worldly life.
