Abstract Of Title
al-Waliyy is one of the key terms in the Koran. This term has both social and political
as well as theological aspects. Since today organizations that claim to establish an Islamic
state have appeared, the importance of the socio-political aspect this term has increased.
In this article, we will take both dimensions of the meanings of this word and
deal with its use in the Qur'an in two contexts: the context of this word with God or other
alleged gods, and the context of the word with the believers or unbelievers. We’ll give
the dictionary meaning and the technical meaning of the word according to jurists, theologians
and sufis. Lastly, we’ll underline the importance of this term in the muslim creed
and its place in socio-political life.
