“Repentance of the prophets in The Qur'an”

HASSAN SARAOGLU

Abstract Of Title

In this study, repentance of the prophets in the Qur'an is examined. The aim of the study is to determine whether the prophets are innocent of sin and to determine the limits of innocence and to deal with the reasons for repentance. To find an answer to the question of "whether prophets sinned and thus repented or whether they had other reasons for repentance" is also among the purposes of the study. In this context, the names of all the prophets asking for repentance in the Qur'an and the reasons for demanding for forgiveness were discussed. The prophets may have made mistakes as a natural result of being a human being emphasized by the Qur'an. Their mistakes are the most natural indication of being human. Adam is the first prophet in the Qur'an and he is also the first one who prays for forgiveness to God in the Qur'an. Moses, like Adam, made a mistake because of his human being feature and demanded forgiveness. While Noah, Abraham and Mohammed's demanding for forgiveness for other humans is caused by their vast compassion, David and Prophet Solomon's repentances are based on their internal accounting. On the other hand, Jonah demanded forgiveness because he abandoned his city without permission as he had no hope of his ummah. Apart from all these examples, the repentance of Jesus is a reference of the condition of his ummah to God. These mistakes that arise from prophets (except Jonah) are not related to their duties in the prophecy, but they originate from their human characteristics. They are not related to the notifications of these contradictions arising from them. Keywords: Exegetics, Innocence, Sin, Penitence, Repentance, Prophets.
