EX ABSTRACT DOCTORATE THESIS MAVLÂNÂ AND MASNAVI FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF TAFSIR Hüseyin GÜLLÜCE Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Sadık KILIÇ Erzurum - 1998 - Pages : Atyg Jury : Prof. Dr. Sadık KILIÇ Mavlana, who lived between 1207-1273 AD (604-672 h.) was brought up among the most distinguished men of letters and mutasawifs (sufi mystics) and benefited greatly from the source of knowledge and culture which reached its culmination in his time. The cities of Belh and Konya where he spent his childhood appeared to be centers of culture and arts of the time. The masterpiece of Mavlana, who was one of the most eminent figures in the history of İslam, is undoubtedly the Masnavi. It has so fer been translated into several languages and has, as a classical guidebook, never ceased to attract the interest of scholars all over the world. Being one of me most well-known works in Tasavvuf (sufi mysticism), Masnavi comprises commentaries of several verses of Koran and provides advices and some golden rules for educators on how to train individuals to be "the perfect man". With such marked features it is regarded as a tafsir (commentary) of Koran, yet not a complete and independent tafsir in itself. This is why the Masnavi is extensively called "the essence of Koran" in the scholarly circles. However, this feature of the work has not appropriately been appreciated and moral lessons have not duly been learned from the exempla interspersed in the text, because it freguently presents Koranic messages, gives advices based on the maxims of the Prophet accompanied by some tales and exempla in order to make it clear and more influential on the readers. The present study is composed of an introduction presenting information on tafsir indicated or demonstrated type of tafsir and tasavvuf followed by three chapters titled "Mavlana", "Masnavi", "Masnavi from the Point of View of Tafsir" respectively and a conclusion. This study attempts to make it clear that Masnavi appears to be a very valuable source of knowledge both in tafsir and methodology of the conmmentary of Koran, It also includes such information classified in accordance with the methods and rules of tafsir which are generally adopted and employed by notable commentators. The results achieved were compared and contrasted with the classical encyclopedias of tafsir in the islamic World.
