Abstract Of Title

Abu Mansur al-Maturidi (d. 333/944) at the entrance of his book Te'vilâtü'l-Qurân had separated the tafsir/ exegesis from the ta'wil/interpretation. According to him, tafsir is absolutely true and this is something the companions can do for they have witnessed events. But ta'wil does not mean absolute right and this means revealing the possible meanings of the verse. Hence the interpretation is the work of the scholars. The reason why Maturidi reduced the tafsir to the sahabe/companions is that they witness the descent of the verse. The fact that this condition escaped attention caused the perception that every narration from the companions would be included in the commentary. Our hypothesis is that Maturidi accepts the narration of the companion who witnessed the landing of the verse, not every narration. Proof of this hypothesis is provided by his refusal or some opinion despite some narrations of the companions. In order to decipher these rumors, narrative commentaries were utilized and comparative method was used in this study. As a result, it was understood that the definition of tafsir of Maturdi did not cover the entire companions and that there was no difference between the interpretations of the first generation of scholars and after the first generation because they did not witness the events.
